ABOUT THE PROGRAM
What this program is
Nawiri Homeward Bound connects people experiencing homelessness with practical, coordinated support, delivered where people actually are rather than where services would prefer them to be.
Homelessness is not simply a housing problem. It sits at the intersection of mental health, substance use, disability, family violence, isolation and lack of income, and a response that only addresses housing will not hold. We pay particular attention to people from migrant and refugee backgrounds, who are often invisible to mainstream homelessness services because of language, stigma and the absence of culturally safe options.
WHO IT IS FOR
Who we work with

Adults and young people aged 16 and over sleeping rough, in cars or in improvised dwellings

People couch surfing, in overcrowded housing or in temporary crisis accommodation

People at imminent risk, including those facing eviction, leaving institutional care, or leaving a violent home
-
People from migrant and refugee backgrounds experiencing homelessness
-
Women and children fleeing domestic and family violence

Young people, and people with disability or mental health conditions
WHAT WE OFFER
How the program works
Street and community outreach
Regular scheduled outreach across metropolitan Adelaide. Welfare checks, essential supplies, safety assessments, and the slow work of building trust with people sleeping rough.
Case management and navigation
A dedicated case manager, housing needs assessment, help with Housing SA and community housing applications, income support navigation, and advocacy with agencies. Up to six months of active support.
Transitional support
Support to keep housing once it is secured. Budgeting, utilities, landlord communication, and follow-up contact at one, three and six months to check stability is holding.
CULTURAL SAFETY

Recognition of the cultural factors that stop people asking for help, including shame, family obligation and distrust of authority

A safe, nurturing and stable environment for children and young people under the guardianship or custody of the Department for Child Protection, through residential care and specialised children's services.

Navigation and settlement support for migrant and refugee communities, delivered in community languages and community spaces.
